The Pit!(lochry)

September 23rd, 2007

During the day Pitlochry’s streets are filled with old people.  It’s a sea of blue hair.  But then on Friday and Saturday night, the local pubs fill up with young people that emerge from nowhere.  I imagine they are probably living in an underground city or they are robots.  I’m leaning towards robots.

The town is actually quite small with mostly touristy shops.  The surround area has a lot of hikes and other activities you can take part in like canyoning, quadding, or white water rafting.  Anyway, I’m out of things to say about it.

Yes, it is the same company as the Oban hostel and Edinburgh Hostel.  So I’m not going to elaborate too much.  Everything is quite similar except they have a TV room here.

Oban

September 20th, 2007

Oban is a nice little town, but there isn’t much tourist stuff to do in town.  However, the surrounding areas have lots to offer.  If you have a bit of time, you can get out and explore the area.  I only really had 1 day in Oban, so I checked out the castle, Battleship Hill, Putpul hill, and the tower (I think that’s what it was called; anyway, it looks like the colluseum).  If you have a few days here, check out the surrounding sights, there are many.

If you read my review of Castle Rock in Edinburgh, it is more of the same story.  This hostel isn’t quite as good, but it is definitely comparible.  The differences are no WiFi (but internet is only 80p/30min)and the common room is smaller, but does have similar facilities.  Other than that, everything pretty much matches up.  I recommend it.

The Lake District

September 20th, 2007

Spending time out in the Lake District really gave me some time just to relax and get some peace and quiet.  I stayed by Lake Windermere, 2 miles from any town.  There were a number of circular walks right out the door of the hostel.  The scenery was just incredible as well.  The area is quite well maintained as it is a national park.  A lot of walks lead you straight through farmers fields, so you get to enjoy live stock amongst other wild life.  I didn’t do much anything else but walk around for hours on end just enjoying the outdoors and scenery so I really have nothing else to tell you.  If you are travelling through the UK, you must check out the Lake District.  You will regret it if you don’t.

Great location.  Great food.  Great staff.  It wasn’t the cleanest hostel I stayed in but was definitely clean enough for a hostel.  The internet was rather costly at £4/hour.  Breakfast as well cost £4.20.  They did also prepare evening meals and day lunches for a fee.  I never had a day lunch, but the evening meals were only about £6.  They were large portions and delicious.  I definitely recommend this hostel.

Manchester

September 14th, 2007

Manchester is not a bad place.  It wasn’t a destination I chose, rather, I just decided to stop for a couple of days to break up my journey towards Scotland again.  The city centre has an insane amount of shopping it seems, but that isn’t what I came here for.  I think 4 museums were pointed out to me by the tourist info desk.  The Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) is a definite stop for anyone in Manchester.  It is huge.  Lots to see with a large number of interactive displays.  The Mcr Art Gallery as well had a few interactive displays and a large collection of art.  The Urbis was something to see too.  I didn’t get around to checking out the People’s History Museum, however.  You can as well go on a tour of the Manchester United Football Club.

I’m sure there are a bunch of other things to do here, but it is quite a big city.  Big cities never really excite me too often, I prefer the smaller, walkable towns.  I find people more friendly and just everything more accessible in general.  My next stop is Windermere in the Lake District of England.  It is a small hostel and a small town, so I’m not sure I will be able to get on the internet at all there.  So this might be my last update for a while as I will be there for 4 days.

The location was kind of good and bad.  Not far from the city centre, but near the train tracks, so you hear trains all the time. Kind of smelly, but reasonably priced.  Breakfast is included.  WiFi is free and they have regular internet terminals for a price.  I could stay here again, but I’d rather stay some where a little nicer.

Llandudno

September 13th, 2007

This place was actually pretty cool.  A lot more touristy than I would have thought at first, but not bad nonetheless.  The Conwy Castle is near by in walking distance down the west coast.  It is a beauitful walk that takes about 45 minutes one way if you are a good walker, but you can as well take a bus service out there.  The town itself is Victorian, so you got a lot of nice buildings around and a really clean main street.  The Great Orme would have been an excellent hike too I think but I didn’t get a chance to do it as I was only there 2 nights, so basically only 1 full day.  I’d recommend spending 3 nights there, I’m sure you could find plenty to do.

This hostel was quite good.  The only set backs were no self-caterring kitchen, no internet, and no people.  I must have been there in a lull period, there was literally only 2 other people staying the hostel and they were a couple.  Quite strange actually.  Otherwise the hostel was great.  Breakfast was included, the beds were nice, they had a shelf for each bed which is great for putting your alarm clock on.  By the way, this is the first hostel I’ve been to with a shelf by each bed.  Most of the time you have to set your stuff in your bed with you.  Putting it in the pillowcase works fine, but if you don’t and you are on the top bunk, you stuff can fall to its doom!  I can’t count the times my cell phone (I use it as an alarm clock) has fallen out of my bed and the battery has fell off.  When this happens the time and date are rest, so it is an inconvience in the middle of the night.  Anyway, I’m rambling on.  The place was pretty good and I’d stay there again.
